Meet The Speakers
Michael J. (Mike) Mannheimer
Mike is VP and Chief Procurement Officer for Cox Enterprises, one of the nation’s leading media companies and providers of automotive services. He has responsibility for Cox’s Supply Chain Services, Energy Management and Fleet Management departments and Cox Newsprint Supply, a company that supplies Cox-owned newspapers as well as external newsprint consumers. He leads “Cox Conserves” – Cox’s award winning energy conservation and environmental sustainability program. Prior to his current position, he was VP of Materials Management for Cox Communications, the broadband communications subsidiary of Cox Enterprises.More
Before joining Cox in 1980, Mike was Director, Engineering & Manufacturing for Olympic Manufacturing, a subsidiary of Sara Lee Corporation. Prior to immigrating to the US from South Africa in 1978, he held various procurement, materials management, project management and production management positions in the steel and mining equipment manufacturing industries.
Mike is a member of the National Cable & Telecommunications Association (NCTA), the Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE), the Conference Board’s Purchasing & Supply Leadership Council, the Institute for Supply Management (ISM), the ISM Senior Executive Forum, and the Purchasing Management Association of Georgia (PMAG). He has represented Cox as a founding member of the Conference Board’s Center for Corporate Citizenship and Sustainability and serves on the board of Trees Atlanta. He is a past board and executive committee member of the Georgia Minority Supplier Development Council (GMSDC) and served on various GMSDC programs and committees.
Born in South Africa, he has lived in the Atlanta area since 1978 and is married with three daughters and a grand-daughter.
Val Haskell
Val Haskell is a Director at Hitachi Consulting in the Environmental Sustainability Solutions practice, where she is recognized as a leader for sustainability solutions. Her interest in sustainability spans more than 20 years. Today, her numerous articles about sustainability and corporate social responsibility can be found online and in print. In 2007, she was awarded the American Marshall Memorial Fellowship and traveled to Europe to learn more about transatlantic approaches to sustainability and corporate social responsibility.More
Prior to being part of Hitachi Consulting’s Environmental Sustainability Solutions practice, Ms. Haskell worked in Business Intelligence and Corporate Performance Management. Her experience with data driven results has lent itself to a practical approach when it comes to sustainability solutions. Her consulting experience includes assisting pharmaceutical, oil services, natural gas, industrial manufacturing, agribusiness, aerospace and defense, and financial services. She seeks real solutions with real results to sustainability problems that face major corporations.
In her hometown, Dallas, she is active in her community serving on the City of Dallas’ Citizen’s Police Review Board and the Davis Street Land Use Committee. Ms. Haskell has been a key figure in the redevelopment of an urban neighborhood for the last six years and has employed many sustainable practices in this process. For her, sustainability extends from personal to professional.
Bates Turpen
Bates Turpen is Senior Vice President, Technical Operations – Global Technology for InterContinental Hotels Group PLC of the United Kingdom (LON: IHG; NYSE: IHG [ADRs]), the world’s most global hotel company. As Senior Vice President, Technical Operations, Mr Turpen is responsible for IT Data Center Operations, Global Networks, Global Reservations Centers, Database, Infrastructure and Enterprise Application Maintenance.Mr Turpen also serves on the IT Architectural Council and Global IT Council for IHG.More
Mr Turpen joined InterContinental Hotels Group in February 1984. Prior to being named Senior Vice President, Technical Operations, Mr Turpen has served in numerous technical and management roles since joining Intercontinental Hotels Group. These roles span across different departments to include Reservations, Computer Operations, Applications Development, and Systems Engineering.
Mr Turpen holds a bachelor’s in Engineering Technology from Memphis State University.
