Volunteers

"As 2009 co-chair and 2008 marketing chair for WIT’s Women of the Year Awards, I interacted with an impressive group of volunteers, judges, honorees and winners, all with a passion for WIT. I am grateful for these new friends and for the added breadth in my professional network here in Atlanta."

Volunteer Placement Process

WIT is proud to offer a wealth of volunteer placements available to enhance business skills, leadership capability, and networking.

Anyone interested in volunteering with WIT should submit their application and will be notified of applicable volunteer opportunities within 30 days. The volunteer term runs January through December for all volunteer positions, unless otherwise noted.

Philosophy

WIT’s organization is structured to involve as many volunteers as possible with varying degrees of responsibility. There are administrative and programmatic positions, board of director and non-board positions, committee and solitary positions, and any combination thereof. All are challenging, all are important and all are necessary in order for WIT to function and effectively meet our mission.

Effective volunteer leadership requires the ability to appreciate WIT’s goals and to motivate all the various members which collectively make up this organization. A variety of volunteer experiences in different WIT Program Areas prepares a WIT volunteer for the top leadership positions. The utilization of the Chair-Elect position ensures continuity and succession planning within the organization.

How to Find the Right Placement

Consider those skills you already have and those skills you would like to develop. Consider the experiences you bring with you to WIT and those which you would like to enjoy. Consider those tasks which motivate you and those which you find more troublesome. Review the structure of the WIT and identify the Program Areas in which you would like to serve. Voice your interests by completing a volunteer application and by communicating with WIT’s Executive Director.

General Policies

The following criteria will be used when reviewing volunteer applications and assigning placements:

  • Time available
  • Fit of skills and needs
  • Leadership experience
  • Seniority based upon past service to the organization

Preference will be given to those individuals who turn in a complete application.

Volunteers who do not adhere to the rules and procedures of WIT or who fail to satisfactorily perform their volunteer assignment are subject to dismissal. Possible grounds for dismissal may include, but are not limited to, the following: gross misconduct or insubordination, theft or misuse of WIT materials, abuse or mistreatment of clients, staff or other volunteers, failure to abide by WIT policies and procedures, and failure to satisfactorily perform assigned responsibilities.

Volunteer Placement Options

The following volunteer opportunities are broken into categories by Program Area.

  • Leadership & Development
  • Events
  • Marketing
  • Outreach
  • Finance

The Program Managers and Committee Chairs make up the WIT Volunteer Leadership Team led by the Executive Director and with advisement by the Board of Directors.
