Atlanta, GA – November 5, 2015 – Women in Technology (WIT) and Scintel Technologies, Inc. announced that Taya Welch is this year’s recipient of the WIT Girl of the Year (GOTY) award, which will be presented at the WIT Awards presented by Cox Automotive on November 19th at the Georgia Aquarium.
WIT GIRLS, a signature program of the WIT Foundation, is focused on collaboration with the Georgia business and educational community to inspire girls in middle and high school to choose careers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). The GOTY award recognizes a girl who has demonstrated a strong interest in science, technology, engineering or math, who has been fully engaged in one or more WIT GIRLS programs in 2015, who is respectful and encouraging to others, who is credited with exemplary performance in education and school citizenship, and who has created a lasting and positive impression on a WIT GIRLS sponsoring host company and WIT member. Scintel Technologies, Inc. has sponsored the award since its inception.
T.K. Ganesh, President and CEO of Scintel shares, “Enhancing human endeavor is at the core of everything we do at Scintel, and partnering with WIT allows us to do just that. Sponsoring the Girl of the Year award has given us an opportunity to nurture young talent and invest in the leaders of tomorrow. Promoting STEM education among young girls is a priority and we are happy to partner with WIT on this cause.”
Taya Amari Welch, a senior at Mt. Paran Christian School, is the youngest of three daughters to Andrew and Tannish Welch. Life hasn’t always been easy for Taya but she’s always chosen to follow her favorite motto “BELIEVE”. Taya balances a full schedule: school, athletics, community service, and working part-time. She wouldn’t have it any other way because this has prepared her for a challenging career in STEM (Data Analytics). Statistics indicate that minority women are not likely to pursue a career in STEM. One of Taya’s goals is to work to change that mindset, personally beat the odds, continue to BELIEVE and encourage others to do so.
In addition to the GOTY Award, three awards for Women of the Year are bestowed in small, medium and large enterprise categories to recognize women dedicated to promoting women leadership from the classroom to the boardroom. The WIT Awards was created in 2000 to celebrate female technology executives in Georgia for their accomplishments as leaders in business, visionaries of technology, groundbreakers in business and remarkable leaders who make a difference in our community. A longtime partner of WIT, Cox Automotive will serve as the presenting sponsor for this year’s awards.
“We value our continued partnership with WIT and are especially honored to be the presenting sponsor of the annual WIT Awards,” says Janet Barnard, President of Manheim North America and 2014 WOTY Large/Enterprise Organization winner. “The women that are honored each year, including the Girl of the Year, continue to be an inspiration to us all. We are committed to investing in efforts that recognize leadership, innovation and educational initiatives that position women for future career success.”
