Thornton Joins WIT after Eight Years at Piedmont Park Conservancy

monica j enhancedAtlanta, GA – September 5, 2013 – Atlanta-based non-profit association Women in Technology (WIT) announced the appointment of Monica Thornton as its executive director. Thornton’s background includes more than 20 years of experience in business development, brand management, public relations and community engagement.

“We are delighted that Monica has accepted the position of executive director for WIT, Inc. and the WIT Foundation,” said Brenda Holmes, Partner at Kilpatrick Townsend and President of WIT. “She brings an impressive wealth of experiences in strategic planning and implementation which are sure to benefit the WIT community and contribute to our continued growth.”

Thornton most recently served as SVP/Chief Marketing and Development Officer at Piedmont Park Conservancy. There, she led the organization’s marketing and development initiatives, a $42 million capital campaign, logo and website redesign, creation of an innovative corporate giving program, sponsorship sales, media buys and many other efforts; all while directing its frontline communications effort.  She has also held leadership positions at United Way of Metro Atlanta, Fox 5 Atlanta, CBS Atlanta, WSB-TV and Georgia Public Broadcasting, where she continues to volunteer as a spokesperson during live telethons.

“The WIT Foundation is particularly excited about Monica’s history within the local nonprofit community,” said Jannet Walker, Vice President, Transportation Business Group at CH2M Hill and President of the WIT Foundation, WIT’s philanthropic arm. “We are confident her expertise in both business and nonprofits will help the Foundation continue to grow and encourage young women to select careers in science, technology engineering and math (STEM).”

Thornton holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Georgia State University in TV/Film and an Associate’s degree in Marketing. She is a member of several professional organizations, including Public Relations Society of America, Association of Fundraising Professionals, National Association for Women and Women in Film.

Thornton will be based at the WIT Executive Offices, which are located at the organization’s association management firm, Meeting Expectations, effective Monday, September 9, 2013.
